This is not just true in the UK. If you are a doctor and deal with patients on a daily basis, and still want to wear a tie, then wear a tie made from microfiber of polyester. The reason for this is simple. First of all they don't take on germs and odors as easily as a silk tie, and the second reasons is that they are more carefree and can be treated with an disinfecting spray, that would damage a silk tie.
